About

About Blackout Curtains

A real blackout curtain has one job. It makes the room dark enough to sleep through the Singapore morning sun.

Blackout fabric is dense and opaque, usually a tightly woven polyester or a cotton-polyester blend with a bonded backing. Unlike a "thick curtain" or a lined day curtain, a true blackout fabric holds its opacity even with direct sun behind it.

Most blackout curtains in Singapore are installed as a single layer on a ceiling-mounted track. A common variant is the day-and-night pair: a blackout curtain behind, a lighter day curtain in front, both on the same double track, so you can soften the light without committing to full dark.

Benefits Of Blackout Curtains

Insulation

Blackout curtains are able to serve the purpose of helping to insulate homes by blocking out direct sunlight, allowing your home to remain cool and hopefully saving you on some electricity bills by not requiring you to turn on the air conditioner.

This is perfect for a tropical country like Singapore, where we are constantly complaining about the heat and cost of living (electricity bills).

Not only do blackout curtains provide insulation against heat, but they are also pretty effective in providing insulation against noise. Most of us live in close proximity to busy roads or other houses, and thus, we can always appreciate anything that can help reduce the noise coming in or going out of our homes.

Total Darkness For Your Bedroom

Blackout curtains are able to block off 100% of sunlight and create complete darkness. After all, the primary purpose of blackout curtains is to create a dark and comfortable environment in a room, especially during nighttime, which is essential for quality sleep.

Capable of reducing outside noise, regulating room temperature, and even providing a layer of insulation for a room, they are suitable bedroom curtains for individuals who suffer from insomnia and need complete quiet and darkness to be able to fall asleep.

They can also be used in an infants' nursery or young children's rooms as they need their naps during the day.

Due to the total darkness created by the curtains, they are also suitable for creating an immersive movie experience in home theatres. They are so effective that even a person from the outside cannot tell if there are lights on inside the house.

Simply make sure that your blackout curtains are the right fit for your window, so you can block out the light that would enter through the possible gaps.

Usage

What Is The Usage Of Blackout Curtains

Here are some of the use cases of Blackout Curtains and its benefits for home owners.

Master Bedroom With Morning Sun

East-facing and north-east-facing bedrooms get direct sun from 6.30am year-round. Genuine blackout keeps the room dark until you choose to open the curtains. The difference between waking with the alarm or without one.

Children's Rooms And Afternoon Naps

Babies under 12 months sleep in short cycles. A too-bright room shortens every nap. The fabric must be dark, the edges sealed, and the cords out of reach.

Home Theatres And Media Rooms

A landed home with a dedicated media room, or a condo living room that doubles as a cinema on weekends. Blackout eliminates wall reflection and lets projectors and OLED screens perform properly.

West-facing Units With Afternoon Glare

West-facing windows take hard afternoon light from around 3pm. For bedrooms that double as daytime workspaces, heavier blackout fabric handles both use cases without needing a second layer.

FAQ

Common Questions About Blackout Curtains

How much do blackout curtains cost in Singapore?

Most blackout projects sit in the mid to high tier depending on fabric grade, hardware system, and whether you pair the blackout layer with a day curtain. We quote one transparent number including installation. Sample bands are in the BTO and west-facing-room blog posts; the in-home measurement gives you a firm number for your unit.

Will blackout actually block all the light, or just most of it?

A genuine blackout fabric blocks 100% of light through the fabric itself. The remaining question is the edges, where the curtain meets the wall and the ceiling. We size the track to extend past the window and recommend the right mounting option (ceiling, pelmet, or wall) specifically to kill those gaps.

Can I add blackout to an existing day-curtain track?

Sometimes. The day-curtain track was sized for around 200 g fabric. Adding a 380 g blackout layer overloads the brackets, and the track sags within six months. We have replaced more "retrofit blackout" jobs than we have successfully retrofitted. Most cases call for a second track, or a new double track that holds both layers properly.

What's the lead time, and can you do it before I move into my BTO?

Typical lead time is 2 to 4 weeks. Premium fabric or motorisation adds a week or two. If your move-in date is fixed, we stage measurement and installation to meet the handover window. Same-week installs the day after key collection are possible if you book the measurement at least 3 weeks before handover.
